Recipe Ingredients

Apple Mixture

  • 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • ½ cup coconut sugar

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided

  • ½ teaspoons ground nutmeg, divided

  • ¼ cup butter

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crumble Topping

  • ¾ cup all-purpose gluten-free flour

  • ¾ cup old fashioned oats

  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar

  • ½ cup chopped pecans

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • Pinch of salt

  • ½ cup cold butter, cubed

Recipe Directions

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

2. Prepare the Apple Filling

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples and lemon juice. Stir well to coat all the apples and prevent browning.

Add the coconut sugar, maple syrup, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Toss until the apples are fully coated in the mixture.

3. Cook the Apples

In your Dutch Oven over medium heat, melt ¼ cup of butter. Add the vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Stir until melted and well combined.

Add the prepared apple mixture to the Dutch Oven and toss to coat completely. Cook for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the apples are tender.

4. Prepare the Dry Mix

In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, the remaining salt, and black pepper.

5. Prepare the Crumble Topping

In a separate large mixing bowl, combine all of the crumble topping ingredients except the cubed butter. Mix until evenly distributed.

Add the cubed butter and use your hands to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture reaches a crumbly texture. This should take a couple of minutes.

6. Assemble and Bake

Evenly spread the crumble topping over the apple mixture in the Dutch Oven. Bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.

7. Serve and Enjoy

Remove from the oven and serve warm. Top each serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy your comforting apple crumble straight from the Dutch Oven!
